NEWSGROUP INDEXING
It is extremely simple to get involved with usenet indexing, all that is required is three things :-
• Indexing service provider (many are free)
• NNTP news feed provider*
• Newsreader software that supports NZB import
Indexing Service Provider
The indexing service providers all vary, but effectively all they are is search engines that provide the NZB file that you import into your newsreader software. So like you would use a search engine such as Google to do a search for something you are looking for, you would use the indexing service provider to do a search for whatever you are looking to download via your news reader software. The web site would come back with the results from its database and offer you the chance to download the NZB file for that particular item.
The NZB file is a single file which you download which contains all the information of the newsgroup articles that are required to build the complete package, so that everything is done simply and behind the scenes (the software does all the clever stuff and hard work for you!)
NNTP news feed provider
The news feed provider provides you with a server where you can download the newsgroup articles from.
You simply need to open an account with them like you would with any e-commerce site such as Amazon, Sainsburys, eBay etc where you will be supplied with a username, password and server address. Simply add these details in your news reading software and the newsreader software will do the rest. This is very easy even for the most inexperienced computer users, but most providers such as Giganews offer 24/7 support, free of charge to help you if you need it.
Prices vary as does the monthly amount you can download, some range from around 5GB a month for $5, others are unlimited for around $15! To give you an idea of how much bandwidth you would need, a normal DVD holds 4.7GB which can hold an insane amount of content. So depending on what you are looking to download will vary on the size of the package you are looking for.
*Although there is many commercial news feed providers out there, you more than likely already have a free one available from your ISP (Internet Service Provider), though the commercial providers such as Giganews store articles for a lot longer (over a year!!) and have other advantages such as privacy, fast speeds and 99.9% completion rates of the articles!
Newsreader software that supports NZB import
The newsreader software is very similar to your email software (in fact, if you use Microsoft Outlook to read your emails, this actually is a news reader as well, although it does not support the importing of NZB files). The newsreader software vary from a simple package to advanced packages for more experienced users. The beauty of the ability to import NZB files, means that you do not have to worry about any of the sophisticated features if you do not want to.
Simply choose the news reader which is right for you, download and install it, enter the account details of your News Feed provider and thats it, you are ready to go!
Now that your software is installed, import your downloaded NZB file and your content will be downloaded to your hard disk ready for your entertainment
It really is THAT simple!
